look at you, counting down and everything. Well, I'm sure I would be too, being able to get back home and everything, see all your non-platoon friends.
Not yet. I'm still in Iraq for another 18 days so I'll start test driving stuff when I get to the states.
I downloaded all the awn-specific files, but when I try to open it from apps > accessories > Avant Window Navigator, it flashes a white box, and nothing opens.
Ahh, yes, I was able to locate the files for the awn. I'll restart now and see if it downloaded correctly. Thanks for the help. I did everything on that 5 things to do list. Anymore sites like that that'll tell me some useful apps to get my hands on?
Also, tar.gz files are the files that correspond with Ubuntu. However, most of the add-ons, are already in the system as is, and it just takes finding and installing them.
System> Administration > Synaptic Package Manager
then search for AWN and put a check next to everything AWN related. It will then proceed to install on your system.
I tried to get the AWN, but I can not find a clear cut way of downloading it. :/
I think I'm going to take a training class to get very familiar with Ubuntu, since I don't have 10 years experience that I had with Windows. Its pretty neat, the way you use the terminal for installing. You can relitively download about anything with it. I've been kind of confused with a lot of downloads though, everyhting seems to be made for Windows. Then there are the knock-offs for Linux. Do I download stuff that's .bz2 or .bz?
Rhythmbox comes standard with the Gnome desktop. With KDE, it's Amarok, which is available in your repository as an optional installation.
The main issue with Ubuntu is because its all open-source, encrypted DVDs, iPod support, printing, etc, does not come standard so it takes a little effort to have the same luxuries as would if you paid 100 bucks for the operating system.
It took a little tweaking, but I can do everything through Ubuntu (and more) that I could with Windows or a Mac. And the ability to customize virtually everything is incredible Go check the desktops thread for my different desktops with this OS.
If you prefer the Mac look, check how the Mac4Lin project that gives you a step by step in transforming your Gnome environment into Leopard.
Oh, and be sure you get your hands on the Avant Window Navigator (dock).

Any music players that will play all media files on one program? like itunes.
Let me know if you need a hand. I know my way around the distribution, so to speak. I've taken a stab at other Linux distros, but I've narrowed it down to three:
-Ubuntu
-Fedora
-L inux Mint
I didn't know you dabbled in Ubuntu. Do you have Intrepid or Hardy?
Thanks. Is it showing up now? I've been using Firefox and I haven't noticed a problem.
